The Anime Convention

You know those weekends where you technically weren't working, but you still did heaps of stuff, leaving you tired on Monday?
That was my weekend!

My partner and I went to SMASH over the weekend, one of the big anual anime conventions that we always go to. It was fun seeing everyone and walking around seeing all the cool cosplays but ngl the con felt kinda mid this year. Same as last year. A lot of us were there to cosplay or run stalls but like, overall it kinda felt like I was there because "it's what we always do". I really enjoyed seeing everyone, and all the cosplays oomfs did were fire, but it just didn't feel the same as it used to haha. It could just be that the con has goten too big, but idk. I still had fun! Lunch with all the homies was awesome.

Maybe next year we lobby-con.

Otherwise, the week was super low-key. We've booked ourselves in for our first Pilates on the 15th, praying we don't die but hoping it'll be good! We also got another run in during the week. I'm washed, but it was good. Averaged 7'20" pace over 3km!

I had some good reflections this week on my working cadence & how I like to work too. I've started doing Evergreen Notes which I mentioned last week, and one of the ones I made that has been super helpful was this:

I've always struggled with actually finishing things, but I've realised with my weekly blog post cadence - that I actually can stick to things and get things done, even if it's just something small.

I think the main thing that blocks me from doing things is the size and shape of the thing, not entirely just my discipline. I pick up way to big things in one go and then get upset when I don't finish them.

  • A new habit should extend a cadence I've already proven as something I'm comfortable doing (Daily is hard, but I've done things weekly)
  • I need to bound my tasks to reasonable sizes. Like - a weekly blog post
  • Slow work is ok, like a research paper or big project, but I need to see it like that and acknowledge that it moves slow. Split things into smaller chunks

Related: Don't talk about doing something, just do it

I beat myself up a lot when I don't "produce anything" or like, have a tangible output from my free time. But I know that's toxic! I'm trying my best to "do more" while also setting realistic expectations for myself. This applies both to my personal life but also 2 my work. I like taking these small random notes and refining them since it makes me constantly re-reflect on their contents. It's been good to just dump stuff out, even if it's just a one-liner, or even just a note title.

Otherwise, I've been also getting back into actually watching shows last week, which has been nice. We started watching Frieren which is really good! We're also keeping up with the new Ghost in the shell as well as with Chainsmoker cat. All fire. I've got to set up a connection w my plex and anilist since I keep forgetting to track episodes as we watch them!
