2 Years on HRT

Monday, the 22nd of June 2026 marks 2 years since I started HRT. Like most would say, I wish I started sooner. But everything happens when it needs to happen. It's kind of crazy how quickly those two years have passed. In that time I've got a new job, a new name, and a new appreciation for life.

I'm really not to sure what I want this blog post to be, but I really cant overstate how positive of a change it has been for both my physical and mental health. It hasn't solved every single one of my problems, but it definitely solved a lot of them.

I was extremely lucky to have supportive Family, Friends and Coworkers when I started. Initially confusing everyone with them/them pronouns before feeling comfortable enough to swap to she/her. It wasn't until a year in that I finally got around to changing my name.

My journey hasn't been super smooth levels wise, I've jumped between different methods of taking E quite a bit, and if I were to do it again from the beginning I'd just tell myself to do DIY Injections.

I Initially started on gels and cyproterone but learned pretty quickly that gels are tedious, slow and sticky! I was not a fan. I swapped within 2 months to patches, which while less tedious, I actually found out I was allergic too (Awesome). I held out on these for a while since they were giving me decent results & the rash it gave me looked funny if I coped hard enough1 - Plus, I was eying up going on implants - mostly for their convenience!

Before starting any medication I got an initial blood testing done

I then started on Gel, before quickly swapping to patches

I swap to 1x 100mg pellet implant

My body quickly metabolises the implant and my levels don't stay high for as long as expected

I get 2x 100mg pellets implanted

Another 2x Implants + Monotherapy!

Levels have finally stabilised ~

This timeline really doesn't show too much detail, it's driven off blood tests, so it's always at the tail end of my cycle. I do have this widget though that shows a bit more detail about right now2:

Nothing will render here when Javascript is disabled since I'm using custom HTML elements.

I'm still on implants and do plan to get another 2 put in - but I eventually want to swap to DIY injections. Mostly for the predictability and consistent cycle, but also for the safety they provide me if the government decides my medication is now illegal or extremely limited.

Right now I rely on a Dr to implant the pellets into me every 6-9 months, whereas with injections, depending on the ester, I can self administer every week. And the shelf life for vials is decently long.

However, even with how grim things look in the US and the UK - I feel extremely lucky to live in Australia where the laws are sane and protect my right to exist 💖

Footnotes

  1. I made a smiley face on my butt cheek with the rashes the glue gave me once, and it was really funny

  2. There's not much research into how bodies metabolise implants that I could use to build this! So it's all rough guesses based off what I could find. I plan to eventually write more about this before I start injections!
